KAIRANGA COUNTY
COUNCIL BUSINESS. Cr W. 11. Hopcroft presided at the monthly meeting of tlie Kairaiiga. County Council yesterday and there were also present Crs C A. Collis, M. W. Voss, JN. I'-. Nielsen, F. J. Russell, J. H. Hillas, E. \V. Croucher, M. U. Hansen and i J . V. Koehier. The question of a deviation on Stoney Hill Road (Taylors Hill), near Whakarongo, was commented on by the engineer (Mr L. C. Pickering), who explained that the Public Works Department had been asked for a £ for £ subsidy. , No reply had been received from the Oroua county Council about this matter., The council decided to ask the Oroug County Council for a reply in writing. The alleged insanitary condition of a cowshed drain on a property within the county was reported upon by the engineer. A committee had investigated the complaint and found it to be correct, 'he engineer had notified the solicitors of the owners of trie estate that remedial measures must be carried out to prevent waste matter reaching the public road. The provision of a twocompartment concrete sump was needed. The engineer was authorised to see the iarni dairy instructor in connection with the matter. Rates outstanding in ithe county totalled £lB3 12s 4d, it was reported.
The council decided to send a letter of thanks to the ladies of the county who staffed the patriotic shop recently, members paying a tribute to their fine effort.
The matter of unregistered dogs in the county was left in the hands of the clerk (Mr N. 1. Nielsen). Mr W: A. Thompson waited on the council to bring before members the state of the road in front of his property on the Longburn-Pongotea road. He desired the council to take action to fill waterholes that were causing the trouble. It was decided that an inspection of the road be made next week.
The Palinerston North Hospital Board submitted the levy for the year, ithe county's share being £6991) Is lid. I'J he amount was passed for payment. The Manawatu Catchment Board notified the council of the rate to be levied for the board. The Kairanga total would be about £I4OO, said the clerk. 'J. he levy was l-14d on the capital value. Because of the extra work involved, the chairman moved that for this year the council collect the money on the basis of a 5 per cent, charge and that the clerk be reimbursed to the extent of 3 per cent. This was carried.
The chairman was appointed to represent the council at the conference of the Counties' Association in July and the clerk was given permission to attend the county clerks' conference in Wellington. A report on the activities of the Fitzherbert "West Water Race Management Committee was received. No major works had been done during the year and there had been no trouble. 'J he chairman of the committee (Cr Croucher) said he was very disappointed that ratepayers had not responded to the suggestion regarding the installation of holding tanks. Nothing had altered his conviction that they would make for the betterment of the supply. Mr Croucher has been reappointed chairman for the ensuing year. | Appreciation of the council's action ' in deciding to make an annual grant of £SO towards the upkeep and- maintenance of the two local cemeteries was received from the Palmerston North City Council. ' It was decided to allow a rebate of 5 per cent, on the general rate only if paid by a certain date. The estimates for tue coming year were adopted, no change being made in the rating. The chairman was appointed to represent the council on tile Victory Loan Committee.
