PUBLIC SERVICE PAY
(Press As'sri.) WELLINGTON, May 5. The general secretary of the Public Service Association (Mr J. Turnhull) stated today that considerable progress had been made by the Public Service consultative committee engaged in the preparation of new salary scales. At the express request of the Government the committee first considered the manner in which the new railway rates should be applied to the Public Service; then, prior to the hearing of evidence of selected groups of employees, it examined those social and economic factors which affect the Public Service today and those likelv to affect it in the post-war years. It also reached a tentative agreement upon a number of general principles such as fixing the minimum remuneration for adults and others, the incidence of any recommended increases, and the question of equal pay for equal work. The hearing of evidence from groups has commenced. The cases of all groups are expected to be in the hands of the committee bv May 5 and the necessary fixtures afterwards will be made.
