CAUSES OF PUNCTURES

In a letter sent to the Manawatu Automobile Association, a member complained about nails and other puncturiu»- materials encountered on the roadways throughout Palmerston North. At Tuesday's meeting of the association the acting-secretary (Mr F. G. Parkinson) reported that a number of complaints had been received about the amount of broken milk ,bottles found on the main road leading from the southern end of the Fitzherbert Avenue bridge for about 40 yards on a Sunday morning. He had made contact with the Massey College dairy factory and had been informed that the broken bottles belonged to the college, but, as it was Sunday, it had nobody to clear them up. The head of the dairy department had promised to have the broken milk bottles attended to immediately. In all, six complaints had been received from association members, and eventually the bottles had been cleared. Arising out of a further complaint, however, the acting-secretary said he had visited the scene himself on the Monday morning and evidence was still there to show that broken bottles had been scattered ovpr about 40 yards of the roadway. Even on that day the particular portion of the road had been glistening with glass fragments. Mr T. M. Rodgers, who said that many tyres were wearing thin, moved that the matter be put in the hands of the police and, the motion was carried. The acting-secretary was instructed to write to the city engineer regarding puncturing materials on roadways in the city. '
