NEW IWO JIMA PUSH

(Rec. 1J.15 a.m.) NEAV YORK, Mar. 8 The Tokio radio states that 2000 Americans, supported by ten tanks, drove a wedge into the Japanese positions in Northern Iwo Jima. The Japanese, however, are still maintaining a large defence area. “Attacking in all sectors today the Marines advanced on Iwo Jima in the face of heavy resistance,” says Admiral Nimitz in a communique. “The Fifth Division on the left flank advanced about 500 yards at one point after engaging the enemy in hand-to-hand fighting. The Fourth'Division advanced 100 to 200 yards. The enemy continued to resist all day with intense small-arms and machine-gun fire.”
