FIFTH ARMY’S BIG EFFORT
OVERLOOKING PO PLAIN
(Rec. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, Mar. 8 The Fifth Army in Italy, after consolidating its gains, now holds all the dominating heights before the Po Plain in the sector south of Modena and threatens from three sides the German stronghold of Vergato, state agency correspondents.
The operation is described as the Fifth Army’s greatest effort since the Gothic Line battle in Novembei. German artillery, which threatened Allied transport and communications, has been cleared from high ground on the ieft of the Pistoja-Bologna road. There were sharp skirmishes yesterday during vigorous moppiug-up operations in the mountain sector 20 miles south-west of Bologna.
