BULGARS KILL PRISONERS
DEATH OF BRITISH SUBJECTS. (Rec. 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY) Alarch 6. Some British prisoners of war in Bulgaria before the armistice were put to death, said the Secretary for War (Sir James Grigg), in the House of Commons. He added that it was not known how many but the number was under ten. Before the armistice there were 30 or 40 British prisoners in Bulgaria. They were placed in camps with Americans who far outnumbered them.
“The physical conditions under which all the prisoners lived were entirely unsatisfactory. The food was inadequate and the treatment rigorous and on occasions brutal. The commandant and two officers in one camp have been arrested and confined. The commandant of another camp committed suicide while waiting to bo questioned. Twenty-three Bulgarian officers and other ranks are under close arrest and 19 are under open arrest for their share of the responsibility. British prisoners of war who have passed through Bulgaria since the armistice report, however, that they have been treated satisfactorily.”—Official Wireless.
