COLLECTION OF RUBBER

DRIVE IN THE CITY

Ways and means of furthering m Palmerston North the collection of old motor tv res and tubes for the reclamation of the rubber in them were examined at a meeting, yesterday, of the Palmerston North Committee for the Reclamation of Waste Material. There were present, bv invitation, teachers from the schools in and adjacent to the city.- The Mayor (Mr Mansford) presided. , Reports made by the teachers showed that the proposal for the collection of this material had come forward only a few days prior to the school holidays and little had resulted in consequence. School children had been asked to collect old motor tyres and keep them at home, but it was pointed out that a holiday period was not the best time in which to ask children to collect such items. It was stated by Mr A. W. Thompson (Terraco End School) that in the city the primary school pupils were young —these schools this year had as their oldest pupils those who were in Standard 3 last year. Such children were but nine or ten years of age. They were really too young to canvass for this material and too young to understand the implication of a war effort in order to explain to householders why they were engaged in collecting tyres. The Intermediate School now had those children who were last year most useful in collecting for the primary schools Mr J. C. Whibley (Intermediate School) promised co-operation and suggested that because the pupils of his school were drawn from all over the- city a system of depots might well be inst,\cutcd. On the last occasion of a collection rubber tyres had remained in Palmerston North and some of them had disappeared. The chairman: That was not our fault. While admitting that the original appeal had been “ill-timed,” Mr G. A. Brown emphasised that the old tyres and tubes werp wanted and could be used to excellent advantage. The meeting decided that a drive for the collection of rubber bo made in the second week in March, and further suggestions that all schools in the city bo approached for their aid were adopted. It was decided that the committee examine a proposal to send out circulars by means of which residents .could advise if they had old motor tyres which could be collected when the drive was made.
