GALE AT WANGANUI

WANGANUI, Feb. 22. A gale sometimes reaching a velocity of about 50 miles an hour during squalls swept Wanganui and district today. In exposed parts of the city and suburbs trees were uprooted and branches torn off. In one residential area a fence was 'Mown down as well as several wireless masts. A power failure because of the gale interrupted tramway schedules for a brief period. Heavy seas are pounding the coastline off Castlecliff, and both the north and south moles at the river entrance are continually deluged in spray. There was a slight abatement in the force of the gale tonight.
