GURKHA AWARDED V.C.
LIFE GIVEN FOR COMRADES.
(Rec. Noon) RUGBY, Feb. 22. The Victoria Cross has been awarded posthumously to Rifleman Thaman Gurung, of the Fifth Gurkha Rifles. The citation stated that it was undoubtedly due to Rifleman Gurung’s superb gallantry and sacrifice of life that his platoon was able to withdraw from an extremely difficult position without greater casualties and that very valuable information was brought back by the platoon. This resulted in the subsequent capture of an important objective. In Italy, in November, 1944, a fighting patrol, in which Rfm. Gurung was a scout, was ordered to reconnoitre Monte San Bartolo, the objective of a future attack. Rfm. Gurung reached the summit of ttie enemy position and, by' drawing the enemy fire, enabled his platoon both to reach the summit and subsequently to withdraw. He was killed while standing on the summit in full view of the enemy and firing at the German positions.—Official Wireless.
