BIGGER MISSION WANTED
(12 40 p.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 23. The placing of two A.I.F. divisions under the command of Admiral Mountbatten in South-East Asia was urged in the House of Representatives bv Mr R. G. Menzies, Leader of tne V Opposition, speaking in the Addressi 'in-Reply debate. He said it was ot first importance that the/ retaking of Burma and Malaya and the relief or the Netherlands East Indies should he first and foremost a British responsibility. ~ , ~ Mr Menzies' said Australia should have a part in the relief of these areas because among the prisoners of war held by the Japanese was the better part of an Australian division. “Is the A.I.F. to be used merely for mopping up or is it to become part of the British forces in the bar Ea c t B ” he asked. He also asked it it were proposed that Australian forces Should play a full part with other British forces m the restoration o British prestige and authority m British zones of South-East Asia.
