SUPERANNUATION PLAN

(Press Assn.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 22. After 36 years of voluntary schemes of local body superannuation the position now in New Zealand was similar to that obtaining in England prior to of the compulsory Act in 1937 and the local transition to a compulsory measure was justified by the existing evidence, stated the National Provident Fund Department in evidence before the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government. The Municipal Conference in 1927, 1928 and 1929 had adopted remits calling for a compulsory measure and the counties in 1928 urged the adoption of a similar plan. The Power Boards’ Association and allied bodies representing the secretaries and engineers had made repeated representations from 1932 to 1936, but action had been deferred pending the implementation of social security. The officers of all these associations had recently renewed their representations and it was considered that the requests for a compulsory measure deserved favourable consideration and approval.
