THIRTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD” FEBRUARY 8, 1915.
An official announcement from Cetinje stated that, as a consequence of Austrian intrigue with Young Turks, anarchy in Albania was daily growing more serious. Wholesale robbing and killing had been carried out by bandits. Many Montenegrin merchants had been victimised and transports on the Boyana River had been seized. Consular authorities bad been unablo to control the situation. Fighting had occurred along the whole front in the Carpathians. The Russians had shattered the enemy’s resistance in three fortified positions at Mczolaborcz and had pursued his forces for miles, capturing 172 officers, 10,000 or more men, 22 machineguns, and 13 guns. Fresh disorders had been reported in Prague where the inhabitants had been irritated by the arrest of Czech students and journalists. Since February 1 five dynamite attempts had been made against Bohemian politicians. German papers were astounded at the condemning of the blockade by neutrals. A telegTam from Berlin stated that all friendly and unfriendly protests would be disregarded, and added that the future treatment of neutral vessels depended on the attitude of the respective Governments.
