GEN. MACARTHUR SUPPORTED

LEADING WAY TO TOKIO. WASHINGTON, Feb. 7. General MacArthur’s offer to lead the way to Tokio has received stout backing by Congressmen, but tlie Navy and War Departments have pointed out unofficially that there are plenty of hurdles in the path of his selection as commander-iii-chief. General MacArthur has now reached the northern limits of his South-West Pacific theatre. Admiral Mountbatten commands in the South-East Asia theatre, and the senior American commander in Asia at present is General Wedemeyer. It is widely rumoured that General Stilwell will command any American invasion of China. Furthermore, the navy considers the area north of the Philippines as a navy show. It was suggested that General MacArthur’s blunt offer had virtually dared the High Command to name anyone else. When announcing the occupation of Manila, General MacArthur said : “Our molto has become: ‘On to Tokio.’ We are ready in this veteran and proven command when called upon. May God speed the day.”
