HOLIDAY RACING
MANAWATU MEETING CUP TO LONGSWORD. Dull and windy weather, following heavy rain early this morning, prevailed for the opening day of the Manawatu summer meeting, the first of the many holiday fixtures of the Christmas season. There was a large attendance and the track was in excellent order. SKYDONNA WINS HIGHWJJtGHT. The Paeroa trained Skydonna took the lead after going two furlongs in the Tokomaru Highweight and had charge for the rest of the way to win nicely. Passing the stands the first time Sky donna was attended by Solver, Vernon, Lord Broiefort, Greek Effort and The Rail. There was not much change until approaching- the half mile, when .Colonel Pitt went into second place followed bj Greek Effort, So'.ver, The Rail, and Lord Broiefort. Into the straight Skydonna still led from Red Chief who had moved up smartly, with Solver, The Rail, and Greek Effort. ' Despite several challenges Skydonna held her place and went on to win nicely from The Rail who just beat Greek Effort, with Golden Tide fourth. NURSERY TO DUPLICITY. Beginning brilliantly from wide out Duplicity scored a very easy win in the Nursery Handicap. After the first furlong Duplicity was joined by Drambuie and they made tho running to the straight from Merciful, Sona, and Gigli. Once in the straight Dup'.icity cleared away and won very easily. In a close finish for second Master Robin put in a great run and just beat Gigli and Drambuie. KURI FINISHES BRILLIANTLY. A brilliant finishing run along the fence enabled Kuri to win the Gillies Handicap No. 1 in a great finish. When they had settUrl down Thefolyn and Tiercel were making the pace from Flotation and Gay Lena. At the far turn Tiercel was a length in front of Theiolyn with Gay Lena, Flotation, Mary Jo and Kuri following. This was the order into the straight and when Theiolyn retired Kuri shot through on the fence to just beat' Tiercel with • Flotation rght up 'and Dash o' Dink and Mary Jo dead heating for fourth. CUP TO LONGSWORD. Masterly riding by W. J. Broughton won the Manawatu Cup for Longsword after a splendid race with a great finish. Alethea and Typhoon made the earlv pace from Lowry Bay, Longsword, Rink and Peter's Choice. With six furlongs to to run Financial had moved through io take the lead from Lowry Bay, Peter's Choice, Tvphoon, Rink, Alethea, and Ha kirn. At, "the far turn there was little change in the order except that Voltaire and Longsword improved their positions. Financial led around the bend for home, eloselv followed by Peter's Choice, Voltaire, Dowry Bav, Typhoon, and Longsword. Six horse's spread across the track for the run home and. with 100 yards to go, Longsword and Vogi drew away to fight oil] a desperate finish, with Longsword beating his opponent by a neck. Hakim was a good third followed by Voltaire, Financial, and Typhoon. DUNBAR AT LONG ODDS. The best finish to date marked the Tararua Handicap when Dunbar got up in time to beat Barrage by a nose. Black Simon, Foxolla, and Barrage led through the straight from Patu Ra, Don Mac and Broiefield. Tavern Light had gone into the lead running into the back from Foxella, Black Simon. Broiefield. Barrage and Don Mac. With three furlongs to go Barrage went to tho front and led into the straight from Tavern Light, Dunbar, who had moved up smartly on the outside, Broiefield, Honest Sal and Black Simon following. Dunbar put in a great run to catch Barrage in time, with Honest Sal a good third just ahead of Broiefield.
