FRONT NOW MORE STABLE

LESS FORCE IN OFFENSIVE

DEEPEST PENETRATION 40 MILES

LONDON, Dec. 22.

The force of the German offensive on the First Army's front has been reduced and the American lines are more stable than they have been since the opening of the attack. The deepest penetration, it is officially announced, does not exceed 40 miles and in the last three or four days the Germans have been able to progress only about 10 miles. However, von Eundstedt's battle groups are still making some gains, more particularly, at the south of the 60-mile front.

Little detail is being released of the struggle in the fogbound hills and valleys of South-Eastern Belgium and Luxembourg, but correspondents say that the buttle has now passed its first stage although much hard fighting undoubtedly lies ahead.

The Supreme Commander, General Eisenhower, has issued an Order of the Lay describing the German offensive as a great gamble and calling on the Allied armies for their greatest effort. '-->'.
