FUNCTION TO SERVICEMEN
The response to the request of the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) to the public to attend a function to servicemen on leave in the Opera House last evening was only fair. Mr Mansford, in welcoming the men on behalf of the residents of Palmerston North, said he felt sure thev would uphold the good name of the New Zealand Forces wherever thev went. There had been a tendency to slacken during the past few months, but we must throw off any weariness and make the Germans and Japanese realise the strength of the United Nations. Mr J. Hodgens. M.P.. endorsed Mr Mansford’,s remarks and Captain K. G. Chamberlain spoke on behalf of the Services, Rev. It. Warnock representing the churches of the city. Mr A. W. Mewton ‘(president of the R.S.A.) spoke on behalf of the It.S.A. and expressed the hope that the men would become members of the association on their return. The servicemen were then presented each with a safety razor and a money belt and Lieut. McMillan replied on their behalf.
