EXCESSIVE U.S. PROFITS

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20.

The Merchant Marine Committee of the House of Representatives reported that American steamship companies, with the Maritime Commission's approval, charged excessive rates in 194] for Lend-Lease voyages from the United States to Suez via the Red Sea. Eighty-one vessels made 90 voyages for a'total profit of 25.000,0;j0 dollars. The rates were reduced in the autumn of 1941. Two lines refunded 51 per cent, of the profits. The others declined.
