Lord Gowrie, • formerly GovernorGeneral of Australia, has been elected to the board of Dalgety and Coy., Ltd. Rev. Canon C. Mortimer-Jones, SI. A. (Oxford), who has been vicar of St. Mary's parish, Waipukurau, for almost seven years, has been appointed to Birkenhead (Auckland) as successor to Rev. Melville Harcourt, who leaves at an early date for New York, where he will be vicar of St. Anne's Church.
The death has occurred of Sergeant W. N. i'crguson, aged 59, who had been stationed at 'I hames for two years. He joined the Police Force in 1908. Promoted sergeant at Auckland iii 1933, he was stationed at Pahuerston North and Stratford before going to Thames. He was keenly interested in acclimatisation matters. Sergeant Ferguson is survived by his wife and three sons in the Armed Forces.
Inspector H. J. Joyce, who has been translerred to Palnierstou /North to replace Superintendent H. Scott, arrived last evening, accompanied by Mrs Joyce, and took over his new duties today. Prior to leaving Auckland Inspector Joyce was farewelicd at a function at the ceutral police station. Superintendent It. Ward, who presided, rel erred to the line record of service of Inspector Joyce during his 10 years in the Auckland district and wished him success in his new office. Representatives of the various branches of the force also spoke and presentations were made to Inspector and Mrs Joyce. Deep regret at the passing of Messrs H. M. Hi.hardson. county clerk, and A. V. Brown, assistant clerk, of the stalf of.the Kangitikei County Council and members of the institute, was expressed at the annual meeting of the Wellington district branch of the New Zealand institute of County Clerks in Palmerston North yesterday. The president (Mr J. Hutton, of Pallia tua), in paying a tribute to both members, said that the late Mr Richardson was a foundation member of the branch and was elected president in 1936, retaining office until 1938. He was also the representative of the branch on the executive of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks for 13 years. Mr Richardson had served for over 50 years as clerk to the Rangitikei County Council and in this service exemplified an tne characteristics of outstanding ability and devotion to duty. Local government had lost an able administrator and * lovable character. •Mr Brown, although not so well-known as his late chief, was held in the highest esteem by those who were privileged to know him. A motion of sympathy witn tne relatives of both members was carried.
