SEVERAL PLACES FREED. CANADIANS'~GOOD WORK. (Rec. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 7 The Canadians last night drove from tassel to Ypres and by this morning had cleared all the Germans from Ypres, says Reuter's correspondent with the Canadian First Army. They met with little resistance in crossing the Belgian border.
Despite the worst weather since D-Day the Canadians, who by-passed Calais, advanced towards Dunkirk, Oitend, and Zeebrugge. Their spearheads are today seven miles west of Dunkirk. PORTS CLOSELY RINGED. With the ports of Boulogne and Calais /now closely ringed, United Kingdom, Canadian, and Polish forces have cleared up more of the country to the east. The enemy have been mopped up from Lille and Armentieres, and in Belgium the city of Ghent has been freed. Canadian- patrols are within seven miles of Dunkirk, where, as in the other ports, the Germans seem determined x to hold on. Jn the present phase, with the Allies building up for the. next great assault, there can be nothing as spectacular as the events of the last few weeks, between the troops and the supply port of Cherbourg lie hundreds of miles of damaged supply routes. . "Little Cassino" is our next objective. It consists of German positions in the hills overlooking the town of Pont-a-Mousson, on the Moselle, midway between Metz and Nancy. The Germans from ."Little Cassino" kept up an almost continuous stream of fire as we hurdlod the Moselle. An officer said the minute boats were under way across the river all hell broke loose. The Nazis used mortars and 88mm guns and even anti-aircraft guns. Streams of lead filled the sky. The artillery barrage, raged during the night and both sides at dawn today were still viciously pounding away. HEADQUARTERS REPORT. '
Today's communique from ■ Supreme Headquarters says Ghent has been captured, while Ccurtrai is reported clear of the eucmv. The Allies have taken Armentiero* and the area west of Lille as far as Merville. Our armour thrust eastward from St. Orner to the vicinity of Cassel. while Allied troops arc on the outskirts of Boulogne and forward elements have surrounded Calais. Our forces to the south are advancing bcvond the. Mouse south-eastward of Namur and north-eastward of Ginot. They are encountering mortar and small-arms fire. The troops moving through the Forest of Ardennes are cast of Auchamps, while the advance north-east and cast of Verdun continues. , The Tan's radio announced that the Canadians have entered Calais. Heavy, medium, and light bombers yesterday 'attacked enemy strongpoinrs in \lc "Havre and Drest, while fighters and fightorboml.rrs bomhed and strafed targels over a vide area of the Low Countries and A\ estern Germany, successfully attacking motor transport, locomotives, railcars and troops. A small force of light bombers during the night attacked road and railway movements in Holland and on the Dutch-German frontier \ st.ron<r force of R.A.F. Halifax and Lancaster bombers, escorted by fighters, m daylight last evening attacked Emdcn. Last night Mosquitoes attacked Hamburg.
