RACING NEWS

SURPRISES AT woodville. {By “Spectator.”) Favoured with fine weather, the Woodville Jockey Club’s winter meeting on Saturday attracted a large attendance and the racing was good. Favourites had a fair innings, but there were some surprises. Only seven races wero carded and the sum of £25,657 10s was handled. This must be considered very satisfactory, because the pay-out on the fifth race was held up until after the final event owing to an inquiry. No winter meeting was held last year, but the sunt of £34,569 10s was put through at the autumn meeting for eight races. An inquiry was held after the President’s Handicap, into alleged interference by the winner, Ring Scarf, with the second horse, Hard Frost, in the straight. After the hearing of evidence it was decided not to alter the placings. - The committee expressed satisfaction with the straightforward manner in which the riders, all apprentices, had given their . evidence. Ring Scarf was fourth into the straight behind Solver, Foxcover and Hard Frost and raced past them to win by two and a-half lengths from Hard Frost, with Foxcover a good third. Lotto finished with a fine run to beat the consistent Sterling liad in the Ruahine Handicap, and give N. Vaughan the honour of riding the winners of the two chief handicaps. ■ Broiefield just won the last race in the closing few strides from an outsider in Mynet, who would probably liavo won had he not run very wide entering the straight. They were well clear of Golden Tide. —Concluding results: — PAPATAWA HACK AND HUNTERS’ CHASE. About two and a-quartcr miles. —1-1 Malacca, 10.7 (R. Hawes) 1; 3-3 Opaltown, 9.11, 2; 4-4 Mamaku, 9.0 3.
