The Vice-President of the United States (Mr Wallace) left on Saturday for China, where he will serve as a special messenger for President Roosevelt.
The special correspondent of the Press Association in London reports that among promotions in the Fleet Air Arm is that of Sub-Lieutenant R. W. Durrant, of Feilding, to the rank of lieutenant.
Air N. L. Ingpen, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Levin, has received notification of his promotion to be manager of the bank at Rongotea. Alt Ingpen assumes his new appointment in July. Second-Lieut. Archibald Carmichael, who has been reported missing, is the eldest son of Airs Hobbs, formerly of Oroua Downs and now of Palmerston North. Lieutenant Carmichael enlisted with the First Echelon and left as a private, being commissioned since going abroad. He has' been in tlie desert battles, also Greece and Crete, and is now serving in Italy. His only brother, Kenneth Carmichael, is serving in the Pacific and is attached to the Fiji guerrilla commandos. He is at present in hospital in. Fiji.
The death has occurred at Wellington of Air J. K. Staples, a director of Levin and Co., Ltd., and manager of the firm’s wool department. With the exception of three years in the service of the Farmers’ Distributing Company, the whole of his business life was spent with Levin and C0.,-whom he joined in 1906. All- Staples was particularly well-known in the Alanawatu and Wairarapa districts. He was formerly active in many departments of sport, notably cricket and tennis. He served for'three years in the last World War.
