RACING AT WOODVILLE

SURPRISE IN THE CUP. The weather was fine for the Woodville District Jocicey Club's winter race meeting to-day. There was a good attendance and the track was easy, i Getting the run of the race in behind ] the leaders (Park Light and Pompit), Red , Glare took the lead with half a mile to go in tho Oringi Hurdles, and won very easily. These three were followed by Spotting Gold and Crackerjack, with Eppmg next. The last-named ran into second place on the home bend, but had no <:hance with Red Glare. Park Light ran on for third just ahead of Noble Fox, who *vas followed by Abdicate and Sporting Gold. Ascot Bloom fell half a mile from home. Taking over the lead when the field had settled down, the Hastings-trained Aroma won the first division of the Maiden Plate with something in hand. He was followed by Thcioway, Glen Urquhart and Gadier to' the straight where Renevc put in his claim, but could not catch the leader. Tid Apa finished on well for third. ■ , In the second division Bay Robo and Sporting Pal were prominent early from Ever Aussie and Tintern. Ever Aussie ran to the front when they lined up for home, but Tintern finished too well for him and won nicely- Ganges was a good third. The steeplechase was attended by plenty of incident, although Malacca won confidently at, the finish. Mamaku and AngloIrish sot out to make the pace, but. the latter ran .off at the fence near the halfmile and Malacca went up to ioin Mamaku in front, with Lucullus Boy next. Setting out, on the second round, Lucullus Boy and Malacca alternated in the lead for Mamaku and Opaltown, with Coaster next At the second last fence Lucullus Boy fell heavily and this left, Malacca to go on for an easy win. Opaltown came with a good run to cut Mamaku out of second place, • with Coaster next. Irish Heart was pulled up with a round to go. The Woodville Cup was a splendid race and resulted in a win for. an outsider in Moderate, who paid a dividend well into doublo figures. Lady Spiral took up. her usual role c, f pacemaker and was attended early by Authoress. Te Kawiti and Tan Uru The order changed very little until thev were running to the .straight, where Moderate and Lowry Bay improved thenpositions. Into the straight Lady bpira led Blue Border, Moderate, Tau Urn and Lowry Bav In a tight finish. Moderate forged to the front 100 yards from home and held off Lowry Bay by a narrow margin.
