RACING AT OTAKI
MALIK KAFUR WINS. The weather was beautifully fine for the Otaki-Maori Racing Club's autumn meeting, held at Otaki to-day. There was a good attendance, and the track was dead but otherwise in good order. Taking charge coming to the second to last fence, the Awapuni-trained Malik Kafur had a comfortable win in the Tararua Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. First Role mado most of the running from Coaster. Nisus dropped his rider after five furlongs, and First Role and Coaster continued in the lead with Maliki Kafur third, there being good distances between them. Malik Kafur improved his position' going the back straight the last time, and had the race in hand some distance from home. The Awapuni-trained First Role beat Coaster for second, both being very tired after an indifferent display of jumping.
Palanui, favourite on the place machine, won the Kuku Maiden Race No. 1 narrowly after a good performance, as he had a good deal of ground to make up in the straight. To Ao began best and showed the way down the back to Sporting Gold and Hine Rei, with Sival wide out. Running to the straight, Te Ao still had charge from Hine Rei (who had moved up fast), Sporting Gold, Grey Dawn and Sival. "Palanui then came fast to secure the decision from Day Lighting, whe also finished well, with Sival a good third. Lady Spiral led all the way to score easily in the Raukawa Handicap. She quickly opened up a gap on the field after leaving the barrier, and although she stumbled when turning Qut of the Blraight she maintained her lead and was six lengths clear with six furlongs to go. Her nearest attendants were Kanui To Pai, Foreign Coin, Alexcelia and Moutoa Bond, and they came into the straight in that order. Te Kawiti finished strongly from the back but could not bridge the gap to the leader. Moutoa Bond was a good third, just ahead of Alexcelia. The Trenlham-trained Moutoa Lad scored an easy victory in the Kuku Maiden Flat Race No. 2. Sir Raleigh, Tintern and Stony Broke were prominent early fsam Moutoa Lad and they raced to the straight in that order. Once in line, Moutoa Lad dashed to the front and won easily. Stony Broke hung on for second, clear of Sandy Cape, who finished well, but Tintern, who was warm favourite, faded out. The Apprentices provided a good race in the Otaki Hack Handicap which was narrowly 'won by Vera Lynn. The early leaders were Homo Rule, Vera Lynn, Cramond Bay. with Latin -Bay lucked in behind them on the fence. They raced in that order until two furlongs from home, when Latin Bay /ell. In a great finish Vera Lynn just beat Cramond Bay, with Ring Scarf right up, followed by Sedgemer.
