BIG AIR VICTORY

AMERICANS GREAT STROKE. LONDON, May. 12. The Americans have won their greatest air battle of the war. When their large forces went out to-day to attack German synthetic oil plants the Luftwaffe called up every Messerschmitt and Fo'ckcWulf available, and they fought with suicidal ferocity.

They screamed on to the bombers from above and from the flanks and swept up from below. The crews said that the sky was thick with enemy fighters and it was "just a case of holding down the trigger and letting them fly into it". In spite of the enemy's efforts to drive off the bombers, i.ioy went through and photographs taken over the targets show that the bombing ; was accurate. The Americans claim to have shot down 150 German planes for the loss of 42 heavy bombers and 10 fighters.
