Discussion on Flood Menace. A decision to hold a meeting of ratepayers at Ooiki, when the flood menace to the district will be placed before them, was made at a meeting ol the Makerua Drainage Board yesterday. City Council in Credit. The, Wellington City Council closed the financial year with a £16,965 general account credit against £‘28,000 lor 1942-43. when, through war conditions, there was an abnormal credit. £IOO,OOO For Housing.

Consent to a £IOO,OOO housing- loan has been given the Wellington City Council by the Local Government Loans Board. .The loan does not require a poll. Under the council’s scheme 90 per cent, of finance is provided, up to a £ISOO limit, at o per cent.

Hundredweight Pumpkins Huge pumpkins, each weighing well over a hundredweight, have been taken to Auckland from Katikati by an officer of the Internal Marketing Division. Grown by Mr G. Hill, a successful farmer in the district, which has long been l\med lor large pumpkins, they weigh 1101 b and 1311 b. Intermediate School.

Cr J. T. Heatley, who has boon a member of the City Council and the Manawatu-Oi'oua Power Board for several years, has announced that he is to seek re-election to both bodies, and lie will also he a candidate for the Soil Conservation and River Control Board. It is. understood that Messrs P. S. Larcomb and C. L. Mowlem have decided to stand for the City Council.

Veterinary Service, Mr W. J. Moynihan (Shannon) reported at a meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ Association that a number of farmers in his district had formed a Veterinary Club. He had received a circular from the Dominion Veterinary Association stating that five Canadian and ten English veterinarians had applied for positions in New Zealand and had been accepted, and were being allocated to various districts. One, an Englishman, had been allocated to Shannon. Members expressed pleasure at this information, and hoped that other districts in the Manawatu would also form veterinary clubs.

Future of Anzac Day. “I believe that in time Anzac Day will be New Zealand’s national day,” declared Hon. AY. Perry, M.L.C.. speaking at the Anzac commemoration service in Wanganui. Anzac Day did not enshrine Gallipoli alone, but the part that all New Zealand servicemen and women played in World War 1, said Mr Perry. People were‘now insistent that this’day should refer not only to the men of the last war but should include those of the present war also. ‘‘The New Zealand Returned Services Association is making representations to the Government for the purpose of having the Anzac Day Act amended accordingly,” Mr Perry added.
