NEW JAP DRIVE IN CHINA

CHUNGKING, April 19

The Japanese have started a new drive believed to be aimed at closing the gap in the Peiping-Hankow railway. The Associated Press points out that the control of this railway and that southwards from Hankow to Canton would cut China in twain, neutralising the Allied bases east of the railways and giving the Japanese a badlyneeded overland route to replace the crippled shipping route along the coast. It is suggested that the new drive might bo synchronised with Japanese assaults on "the Chinese Indian supply lino north of Burma.
