STRONG MEASURES TAKEN
TO DEAL WITH STRIKERS
(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, April 18. The Government dealt a strong blow at the inciting of strikes today when it announced a new defence regulation under which strikers are liable to five years'
imprisonment or a fine of £SOO.
This action fs the direct outcome of the recent illegal stoppages in the coalfields and among apprentices in the shipyards. It is understood that the Minister of Labour (Mr Bevin) consulted the War Cabinet before issuing the new regulation. He also presented a draft of the new regulation to the British Employers' Federation. —Official Wireless. A Press Association cable says that the new defence regulations come into force immediately. The Press Association's Parliamentary correspondent says that freedom of speech will be safeguarded and a man will be able to say what he likes, for example, at a properly summoned trade union meeting, but a prosecution will be launched if ho foments a strike outside on his own initiative.
