AUSTERITY SUIT
ADJUSTMENTS EXPECTED. WELLINGTON, April IS
Austerity suit regulations, concerning, the value of which as a war economy measure there has been some conflict' of opinion between the New Zealand Standards Institute and the tailoring trade, may be the subject of a Ministerial pronouncement shortly. Certain recommendations are reported to have been made to the Minister by the Department of Industries and. Commerce. Whether there is to be a complete abandonment of the regulations as applied to men's suits, or merely a relaxation, is meanwhile not disclosed, but some adjustments are expected. In so far as they concern the manufacture of suits, the regulations have never found general support among lai'.ors, who were very sceptical of savings in materials or labour. Action was recently taken by the Price Tribunal to stabilise in some measure the cost of suits, and to discourage any flair for extravagant buying. It is calculated that this will have the effect of reducing the purchasers' outlay on top-priced suits by some £2 a suit, the effect of the fixation of a ceiling margin which cannot be exceeded being to produce a sharp decline in the percentage of profit as the price of the suit rises. -
