U-BOAT MENACE
STILL HELD IN CHECK ’ MARCH SHIFTING LOSSES (N.Z. Press Association.—Copyright.) (Rec. 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 9. Though a little higher than those in February, our merchant shipping losses in March were still 1 low and tho rate of sinking U» ; boats was fully maintained, says a. joint statement ffiy Mr Churchill and President Roosevelt. 1 March was an active month in tho war against the U-boats, which operate widely in dispersed areas from the Barents Sea to the Indian Ocean. The enemy ( erse> vered vainly in his strenuous endeavours to disrupt .the flow of supplies by the northern routes to Russia. Our merchant shipping losses mainly occurred in far distant seas. The Allied merchant fleet continues to improve both in quantity and quality, but the strength of the U-boat force remains considerable and calls for powerful efforts from surface and air forces.
