MOTORING INTERESTS

Mr W. 11. Brown, who presided at a meeting of the Manawatu Automobile Association on Tuesday night, extended a Welcome to Mr W. B. Tennent, who was taking his place at a meeting of the association for the first time. Mr Brown stated that he ■ had a report to mark on the Foxton Beach camp site, and the meeting agreed that this be placed before the camp sites sub-commit-tce. Thirty-four nc\v members were elected. Comment was made that this showed that some of the members who had retired from the association because of war restrictions now' felt that they could join again, and this was a very satisfactory position. A letter was received from Mr E. Barling commenting on the vast improvements which had been made at the Himatangi beach. The letter was referred to the camp sites committee.

The Palmerston North town clerk (Mr J. It. Ilardie) v/jte, stating that the City Council, as well as the association, had been very much concerned about the delay occasioned by the Army in neglecting to restore the grounds and at the Esplanade camp site. The council liad agreed to do its utmost to have tho camp site put in order so that some of the ‘facilities previously existing would be available for motorists over the holiday season. The letter was received, and the association decided to write to Cr. J. T. J. Heatlcy, thanking him for the work he had done to get the camp site ready. The chairman of the Foxton Harbour Board (Mr J. A. Nash), in a letter stated that, in view of the association's request regarding cars and motor-cycles beipg driven at excessive speed on the Foxton Beach, arrangements had been mado with tho police to make inspections at the beach during the holidays. The association received tho letter, and it was explained that the control of tho beach actually was vested in the Manawatu County Council. It was decided to write to the Makcrua County Council. asking it for a copy of its by-laws with regard to traffic control on beachs, as its system had been very successful. This matter was referred to the camp sites committee for discussion at its next meeting. In the patrol’s reports it was stated that a new sign-post “Detour to Wellington” had been erected at the corner of the Foxton-Shannon and FoxtonLevin roads. There were ample signs at this corner now, and there should bo no traffic getting through to the Whirokino bridge by mistake. The report suggested that a light be switched on at night over one of the association’s square boards, thus solving the difficulty of over-shooting the corner and continuing on to tho bridge. The association agreed that this matter should be taken up at once with the, Manawatu-Oroua Power Board.
