OBITUARY

A wide circle of friends last week learned with regret of the sudden death, at an early age, of a wellknown Manawatu sportswoman, Mrs Williamina Connolly. Mrs Connolly was the daughter of Mr and the late Mrs W. N. Brown, formerly of Shannon, and now of Palmerston North, and was born in Shannon 29 years ago. She was educated in Shannon and at the Palmerston North Girls’ High School, which she attended for three years. She excelled in sports and represented the school at tennis and hockey. She was also physical culture champion for a long period. On leaving school she worked for various firms in the lower part of the North Island, and represented Bush District (Wairarapa) in the New Zealand basketball championships in 1936. In 1940 she was employed in retail stores in Palmerston North and represented business houses in marching teams, as team captain, at the interhouse competitions that year. On December 7, 1940, Miss Brown married Dvr. J. A. Connolly, of Wliakatane, who proceeded overseas in 1941 and is now serving in Italy. Mrs Connolly leaves a 19 months old daughter," and four sisters and one brother to mourn their loss. These arc Mesdames S. Graham (Shannon), A. G. Ur win (Raetihi), I. M. Heble.y (Wellington), and Miss Jean Brown (Palmerston North), and Mr A. Brown (R.N.Z.A.F.).
