FREEZING WORKS IDLE

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 26.

Thomas Borthwick and Sons’ freezing works at Belfast were idle this morning owing to the men refusing a request by the company for an increase in the number of men on the chains.

Negotiations over the dispute wore opened yesterday afternoon, when the District Manpower Officer (Mr M. Ross) and the Inspector of Awards (Mr S. E. McGregor) met both the management and tile men. No agreement was reached, and when the men were informed of the company’s decision this morning they refused to man the works. The company wished to place 35 men on each chain, but the men demanded 35 men on one chain and 30 on the otkor. a
