DOMINION TOURNAMENT.
(Press Assn.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 13. In the New Zealand bowling tournament 52 players scored four wins on Wednesday qualifying with one life for post-section play in the singles, and the 17 with five wins went forward with two lives. Fiftyfour will go forward with one life from the section play to-day and there are 18 "two-lifers," so that 106 players will enter post : section play with one life and 35 with two lives. The "two lifers" from fn-da-,'.: play are:—O'Neill (Runanga), Hewitt (Alexandra), Exelby jFrankton Junction), Short (Pukekohe), Williamson (North East Valley), Hope (North East Valley), Maclean (Omakau), McDonald (Hutt), Gilbert (Kelburn), Hampton (Sumner), Martin (St. Kilda), Gray (Kelburn), Anchor (Hamilton), Hill (Christchurch R.S.A.), Taylor (Carlton), Edwards (St. Kilda), Ure (North End, Invercargill), Ferguson (Balmaccwan). The following qualified to-day for post-section play in the pairs:—Leith and iviucn (i'dieii), Barton and Stephensoii (Nelson), Thomas and Callender (Otago), Rendle and Bridges (Frankton Junction), Williamson and Joseph (Canterbury), Caulton and Bendall (Greymouth), Lackington and Parrant (Mt. Eden), Cormack and Spiers (St. Kilda), Keast and Manning (Timaru), Grant and Kcbby (Hornby), Alloo and Alloc (Owaka), Forbes and Watts (Bcckenham). Dott and Smith (Elmwood), Taggart and Keast (Te Rangi), Tod and Doyle (Southbridgo)), Hillhousc and Armstrong (Runanga), Curtis and Sorenson (Carterton), Edgar and Mills (Tainui), Whyte and Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.), Edlin and Jack (Wanganui). Trie remaining 52 of the 70 sections in the pairs will be decided to-morrow and post-section play in both singles and pairs will start on Saturday. The most decisivo score of the tournament was established when Morrison (United) won his last game 31—0. The Hutt player, McDonald, beat James (Owaka) by the margin of 37 —4. ■ Several ox-champions were seen on the Kaikorai to emerge with two lives G. Gray (Kelburn) beat such well-known players as Haworth (Canterbury) 19—13 and Clarke (Carlton) 16— 15. Haworth and Clarke also qualified. Taylor (Carlton) beat Veitch (Dunedin) and eliminated liim from the competition. Vella (Onehunga) was one of the most spectacular players among the "onelifors" and helped to eliminate tho former pairs champion, Tyrrell (Roslyn). The winning pair at the British Empire Games in 1938, Macey and Denison (Auckland) both met defeat in the singles. Smith accounted for Denison and was unbeaten until the last round. One of the early sensations of thc_day was provided in the' pairs competition by the Otago pair, Thomas and Callentfir, who beat the present champions, Maslin and Squire (llawera). 21—20. Maslin and Squire were beaten again and failed to qualify. T. Gray (Kelburn), one of the bestknown players in the Dominion, began with a convincing win against Wilson run until stopped in the fifth round by a run until stoppe din the fifth round by a margin of two points.
