EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD."

JANUARY 14, 1914.

It was learnt from Johannesburg that the cailway strike had been confined to tho Transvaal. Train services wore gradually resuming and everything had now quietened down. A later menage stated that a general strike had been declared throughout South Africa. Martial law had been proclaimed in Capetown. A message from Texas stated that the United States was interning six generals and 3000 men who had crossed into the United States from Mexico after tho Ojinaga battle. It was thought if the men were handed back as hostages they would be killed.

A terrific volcanic eruption, had occurred in Japan when Mt. Sakura Shima erupted and destroyed a number' of villages. It was thought many hundreds had been killed.
