FRENCH TROOPS

IN NEW OFFENSIVE LAUNCHEIT"IN ITALY LONDON, Jan. 13. In Italy the French troops with the Fifth Army have launched an offensive on a sevenmile front north-east of Cassino; on the road to Rome. They have taken two heights in an advance of about 1000 yards, and havo taken prisoners.

The Allies arc blasting their way forward on a 20-mile front towards Cassino. When the attaciv began a few days ago it was on a front a little more than half that length, but the French drive in the snowcovered hill country has extended it. The Americans arc now firmly holding Cervaro, the capture of which has been officially confirmed. The Americans, who took the village yesterday, are now a little more than three miles from Cassino. By taking Cervaro the Allies* havo readied country which is flatter andjess difficult, but the Germans are expected to defend the remaining part of the way to Cassino stubbornly.' On the remaining sections of the front and on the Eighth Army sectors there has been patrol and gun activity. It is clear, says a correspondent, that the Germans are holding a new defence line against the Eighth Army- in considerable strength. BAD WEATHER CONTINUES.

Bad weather continues to delay progress in Italy, states the Official Wireless. A land communique states that French troops of the Fifth Army advanced against stiff enemy resistance to take several important heights. Their progress continues. An air communique says: Yesterday bad flying weather limited operations. Medium bombers, _ however, attacked railway junctions and bridges at Arce and fighter-bombers attacked enemy positions near Orsogna. Two enemy aircraft were destroyed. Three of ours are missin S- . L i r. A Navy communique states: Uuring Monday night our destroyers continued to harass rail traffic on the east coast of Italy. Return fire from shore batteries at Civitanouva, below Ancona, caused no damaged. They also shelled another area, where they started a fire.
