ENGAGEMENT

McNEIL—COCKS.—The engagement has been announced of Noclcun, second daughter of Mr and Mrs V. K. Cocks, of 250 Broadway Avenue, Palmcrston North, to William Rex, third son of Mr and Airs 11. McNeil, North Street, Woodville.

Tho resourcefulness which stood the British pioneer women in gooil stead in early Colonial days has stood to them in wartime when the shortage of clothing coupons has called for initiative and resource. They have found that dog's combings can be spun into yarn. The Women's Institute in Ashford, Kent, lias been knitting sweaters and baby garments from the coats of Pekinese, chows, Old English sheep dogs, or any other breed providing hair that is not too wiry. Combings from Persian cats are also said to spin up well and to equal the best Angora. Black-out or no black-out, Russian women continue to cultivate and harvest crops witli German bombers only a few minutes' flying time away. A message describes, jn the words of a 20-year-old girl worker, the method by which ploughing is done at night. "Night work in the black-out isn't easy," she said, "but we've managed. When we start to plough a new section one of us lights a piece of tow for a couple of minutes at the far end of the field to guide the driver while she cuts the first furrow. After that it really isn't hard to get your bearings in the dark from the previous furrow."
