TUESDAY'S RAID ON SOFIA

(Pec. 11 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 13.

The Allied air raid on Sofia on Tuesday was the greatest so far against a single area in the Balkans, says a Budapest report quoted by the Stockholm newspaper Dagens Nyheter. It was comparable with the Berlin raids. Many incendiaries caused fires which were still burning yesterday. The population is fleeing in thousands and the transport is not sufficient to evacuate all wishing to leave. Because of the Allied air attacks the Bulgarian Government has ordered the entire civilian population of Sofia to the provinces, says the Daily Telegraph's Istanbul correspondent. Other places which are scheduled for early evacuation include Varna, Gurfras, and towns on the railway lines linking Bulgaria and Yugoslavia.
