(Press Assn.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 12. In perfect conditions the New Zealand bowling championships were commenced this morning with sectional play in the singles and pairs. The 544 entries in the singles have been divided into 76 sections, 38 of which were played to-day, while the remainder will be played on 18 greens to-morrow. The large entry for the pairs, numbering 436, has been divided into 70 sections, eight being played to-day, while 10 sections will be played to-morrow. Tho following 17 players in the singles, who won all five games, qualified for the post-section play 'with two lives: MacDonald (Balniacowan), Dewar (Sydenham), MoKenzio (To Rangi, Invercargill), Squire (Hawerjl), Cushnie (Edendale), Hanilyn (Ashbury), McClymont (Ponsonby), Mills (Tainui), Higginson (Grey Lynn), Ewing (Stratford), Spearman (Christchureh R.S.A.), Joseph (Canterbury), Loo .(Sydenham), Deare (Carlton), Clark (Ashbury), Dykes (Scatoun), Hunter (Petonc). Fift.y-ono players scored four wins and will go forward with one life each.
From tho eight sections of pairs already decided the following qualified for post-section play: Hughes and Ferguson (Balmacewan), Masefield and Martyn (Matai), Macklow and Vella (Onchunga), Nicholas and Mitchell (Blenheim), Hamilton and Hinton (Alexandra), Jackson and . Ure (North End, Invercargill), Bennie and Buchan (Balmacewan), Mcnzics and Leo (Timaru), Silver and Veitch (Dunedin), Hulston and Haworth (Canterbury), Bowes and O'Neill (Runanga), McKcnzie and Belcher (St. Kilda), Lemin and Mercer (Groymouth), and Goodwin and Goodwin (Upper Hutt). The present singles title holder C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) won all his games by handy margins.
