SMASHING RABAUL
HEAVIEST RAID YET. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright.) (12.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 13. The heaviest raid yet on Rabaul (New Britain) was carried out on Sunday, it is announced from South Pacific Headquarters. About 200 Liberators, dive-bomb-ers and torpedo-bombers and fighters struck at Vunakunau and Tobera aerodromes. Tobera airfield is believed to have been made largely unusable. When 40 Zeros rose to intercept the attack on Tobera, New Zealand and American fighters shot down 21, with five others probably destroyed. Two New Zealaiid-mannod Lightningsand one American-manned Hellcat were lost. Japanese installations in the Shortland Islands, in the Northern Solomons, were shelled on Saturday night by Allied cruisers and destroyers firing GOOO rounds. Proporanu Island was also shelled and shore batteries silenced.
