FIRES

A fire lit by members of the Army near the Hokowhitu golf links to clear an area of ground was the cause of a call to the Palmerston North Fire Brigade at 1.46 this afternoon. The fire got out of control, so a call was .made to the brigade. The fire was extinguished without any appreciable difficulty. One or two small buildings belonging to the military authorities were destroyed, but apart from this the damage' was negligible. • The brigade also received a ca.l at about 11.45 this morning to a small grass fire in Waldegrave Street. No damage was done and the blaze was easily put out.
