Mrs G. M. McCaskill (Miss Gwen Gibbs), of Broadway Avenue, who has returned to Palmerston North after spending a holiday at Tokaanu, will proceed to Wellington on. Thursday. She will return in February.
Lieutenant Keith Elliott, V.C., will wed Miss Margaret Markham, of Hastings, on February 2 at St. Matthew's Church in that town. Misses Eileen and Lucy Elliott, twin sisters of Lieutenant Elliott, will be bridesmaids.
As a result of experiments sponsored by the Board of Trade in England in the production of a utility yarn, British women will be more smartly dressed this year even than in peace-time, according to an overseas journal. From this yarn are woven materials that cannot be distinguished from pure linen, real silk, or wool. They are also fairly cheap. These materials will have the added virtue of possessing double the wearing quality of a pre-war garment sold at double the price. Thousands of yards are being reserved to help in the rehabilitation of Europe. It is interesting to note that there are more than 3,000,000 American women volunteers in the seven Volunteer Special Service Corps of the American Bed Cross. The Volunteer Nurses Aide Corps has grown from 364 in 1941 to 50,000. Members of the Staff Assistance Corps act as information experts, public speakers, clerical workers, and telephone operators at Bed Cross centres. The Canteen Corps has 75,000 members trained for community feeding, in case of disasters. " The Grey Ladies, 15,000 in number, perform countless services for the ill and convalescent patients in Federal and civilian hospitals. The Home Service Volunteers, about 7000 in all, help service men and their families solve their problems. The Motor Corps lias 30.000 members who drive mobile feeding units, and army vehicles, take donors to blood banks,' and meet ships with , evacuees,
