VITAL CANAL LINK
DESTROYED BY R.A.F. THREE LOcls" BLOWN UP LONDON, Sept. 2. A vital link id the important canal system serving Antwerp has been broken by British aircraft. In spite of heavy enemy opposition the airmen drove home their attack, and dropped their bombs accurately. They flew in at housetop level through heavy fire and succeeded in destroying three- important locks. One pilot says that the airmen did a splendid job and scored many direct hits on the lock gates. Three Hurricanes and one Typhoon were lost. In the fourth year of the war the R.A.F. dropped 96,000 tons of bombs on Germany, nearly double the total weight dropped in the first three years. General Arnold (commander of the United States Army Air Force) has arrived in Britain where he will consult with Air Marshal Sir Charles Portal (Chief of the British Air Force), General Devers (commander of the American forces in the European theatre), and other high officials.
