MANAWATU SEAT

MR M. H. ORAM AS CANDIDATE. The National Party's selection committee in the* Manawatu electorate met in Fcilding last evening to choose the party's candidate in the coming election. Delegates from every branch were present and Mr D. H. Mclnness, chairman of the 'electorate, presided in the initial stages, after which the chairman of the Wellington division (Mr Mcllroy) took over during the voting. There were three candidates offering—Mr D. Rowe (Rongotea), Flight-Lieut. E. W. Barnett (Tokorangi) and Mr M. H. Oram (Palmerston North). Each nominee was allowed 15 minutes in which to address the meeting, and Mr Oram proved the successful candidate. Mr Oram assured the members that he would do all in his power to further the party interests and if elected would endeavour to prove that the confidence placed in him was well merited. He then introduced Mrs Oram to the delegates. V t Reference was made by Mr Mcllroy to the retiring member, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, who, he said, had rendered wonderful service over a great number of years and was leaving a splendid record behind him.
