EDUCATION BOARD

Mr E. F. Hemingway presided at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board, when further staff changes were announced, including the following:—Appointments: Miss M. A. Coulter, assistant mistress, Parewanui; Mr A„ E. Mills, headmaster, Oroua Downs. War appointment: Miss M. M. Caird, sole teacher, Glyneath. The department notified the supply of bucket pumps to be distributed to schools where the need is most urgent. The board decided to supply one each to Rangiwahia, Oroua Downs and Apiti. 'l’he Intermediate School Committee asked for assistance towards the purchase of a motor-mower. A subsidy of £ for £ was approved. The department wrote approving of the school conveyance service for Linton. The architect (Air E. R. Hodge) told the board that the war has considerably depletod the number of the carpenters and specialists who look after the equipment and buildings, 19 having entered the Armed Forces, regardless of the weakening effect on. the board’s building activities. These men, while often forgotten, were as important as the teachers in conducting the Dominion’s educational service. The older members of the staff who arg beyond the ago for military service are doing the best they can to render the service expected of them in order that Ihe building department may play its part in the welfare of those dependent on its service. Reporting on nature study in schools, Mr E. H. Lange said' that there was still a tendency to teach along steoreotyped lines in some places, the “fixed information lesson” still holding sway. There was. however, a body of teachers who relied on nature study corners, plots in the school grounds, rambles in the local environment, etc., and where this practical method of approach was adopted the work rested on a sound basis.
