(9.5 a.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 27. The captain of a medium-sized British merchantman, torpedoed in the Atlantic close to the Equator, has arrived at an east coast port. Ho reports that the submarine surfaced after tlie sinking and ordered lnm aboard for questioning. The men told him he would never return, but the submarine captain apologised for the torpedoing and said it was a pity the two countries were at war. Then lie ordered his crew to place food and water in tlie two lifeboats wherem were the entire crew of 41. He gave them their position and sailing directions and all were saved.
