A record-breaking performance by Kindergarten in winning the Auckland Cup was the highlight of the opening day of the Auckland summer meeting. Kindergarten carried 10.2 and ran the two miles in 3.22, thus breaking Nelson’s long-standing weight-carrying record with 9.12, and also reducing by a second the time record put up by Cuddle in 1936. Added merit was given to the performance of Kindergarten because ho ran to th; front with ease at the home turn and finally won casing lip by lengths. The crowd ftvas thrilled by the great effort, and accorded Kindergarten the best ovation that has been received by a winner at Ellerslio for many years. It was a wonderful effort, and one that only a real champion could produce. The race was solidly run throughout, both miles being run in 1.41, and the last three furlongs in 37 2-ssee. The early pace was made by Gay Rosette, who soon took a clear lead, and Kindergarten, fourth to last in tho first half-mile, did not begin to become prominent; til! seven furlongs from home. Gay Rosette was beaten with five furlongs to go, and when Rakanui ran to tho front from Regal Fox and Foxola at this stage Kindergarten and Lou Rosa a'so closed up. Kindergarten ran to the front effortlessly at tho turn, and lie had the issue in safe keeping at tho distance, winning with his rider sitting still, by five lengths. Lou ‘Rosa fought on gamely at the finish to take second by a neck from Foxola, who made a splendid showing. Foxsen, battled on to be fourth, and was followed by Erndale. Scalaw, Hogarth, Regal Fox, and To Kawiti.
