AXIS STRATEGY
TO ABANDON TRIPOLITANIA. LONDON, Dec. 24. There seems to bo no doubt that the Axis strategy is to abandon Tripolitania and concentrate on the defence of Tunisia and the Sicilian Narrows. The Morocco radio reports that most of Rommel’s retreating force has passed Misurata. Our patrols continually press forward to test the strength of the Axis covering force, says Reuter’s Cairo correspondent. General Montgomery, though pressing on, is running no risk of thinning out his troops and the full weight of the Eighth Army is ready to be thrown in behind the armoured units. Should Rommel's retreat continue at the present pace, it is thought unlikely that any enemy resistance will be put up, at least till broken country is reached on the line of Wadi Zamzam.
The possibility of Rommel retreating to Tunisia without even a pause cannot be entirely discounted, states another correspondent. Tripoli, like Benghazi, has no defensive positions.
