POTATOES CHEAPER
BANANA PRICES FIXED
(Press Assn.) WELLINGTON. Dec. 12. As a result of marketing adjustments the maximum consumer price of new potatoes lias boon reduced ironi Monday to a pound in the North Island and Nelson Province and 3d a pound elsewhere, the Price Tribunal announced to-day. An amendment to the price order has been gazetted giving effect to the reduction on prices set out in the original price-fixing order. The new price just announced will remain in force until the end of February. There will be no change in the original price fixed for payment to the growers. The Price Tribunal announced to-day that tho retail price of bananas has been fixed at id a pound in the metropolitan areas of Auckland. Wellington, Christchurch, and Duncdin, and 7£d elsewhere The order makes it obligatory on retailers to sell bananas by weight instead of by count. Tho Tribunal states that investigations made show that the price fixod will enable the retailer to earn. a margin of profit commensurate with the hazards involved, while enabling the fruit to reach the public at a price not out of proportion to the more difficult import conditions existing at tho present time. The prices fixed were the maximum and for fruit in prime condition; lower grades would necossarily be rotailod at prices pro rata lower.
