FIRE BRIGADE’S STRENGTH
AVhen the Palmerston North Fire Board applied to the Armed Forces Appeal Board for the retention of four permanent and two auxiliary firemen all the appeals were adjourned 6ine die. The secretary of the Fire Board (Air C. V. Day) gave evidence that there were 16 permanent brigadesmen, this being the nominal full strength. The auxiliary’s strength, however, was eight below the nominal number, and might shortly be ten below it. The chairman of the Appeal Board (Mr T. L. Scddon) said it was disconcerting to see that the brigade, taken as a whole, was below strength. At the moment there was a very good case for maintaining its strength, and if the international situation eased then circumstances might change. The Crown representative' (Mr 11. J. Worthington said, in respect of appeals also lodged for nine members of the Emergency Fire Service, that ho had been instructed to ask that all such appeals be adjourned until January. This was (jone, and the board pointed out that in the Palmerston North E.F.S. there were two category A men who should be replaced if possible,. Air Bay said this would bo given attention.
