POHANGINA COUNTY

Reporting to tho monthly meeting of the Pohangina County Council, yesterday, the engineer (Mr D. Watson) stated that in order to carry out work according to urgency in the past month tho varied activities of tho very limited number of men (other than the few surfacemen employed) were spread over a considerable area of the county. There were numerous washouts and slips to be contended with and on more than one occasion these completely blocked the road. However, as much time as possible was spent in grading and carting gravel to roads urgently requiring attention. The Public Works Department advisejl that tho replacement of Whitehead’s bridge could be proceeded with, there being £SOO available in this financial year of the subsidy of £3 for £l. Tho engineer said tho estimated cost of tho bridge was £3200, but obtaining materials might bo difficult. On the motion of the chairman (Cr. S. J. Strahan) it was decided to call for tenders for the construction of tho bridge, which is to be of reinforced concrete. The Kairanga County Council forwarded £299 as the Pohangina County’s share from the district pool of heavy traffic fees. .The Public Works Department advised that subsidies amounting to £2039 had been granted to cover maintenance costs on tho four main highways in the county, the letter emphasising that tho utmost care in the expenditure of funds should be taken. The subsidies (all £3 for £1) were shown as follow: —Fcilding-Raumai (via Colytonl, £138; Pohangina Valloy-Apiti, £1128; Ashhurst-Pohangina, £347; KimboitonApiti, £426. The Counties’ Association asked by letter for an expression of opinion as to whether county council work should be declared an essential industry. Following a brief discussion, tho council decided to reply favouring such a declaration, tho view being that county councils would be wise to retain what labour they had now, even though there might be disadvantages in operating under an ossential industry declaration.
